How to Remove Pet Odors and Stains You must completely deodorize the spot where the pet went to the bathroom, or the animal will reuse the area. If you have pets, make sure you have a supply of an enzyme product especially formulated to deal with pet accidents. Such products are available from pet stores. If the accident is on carpet: - First remove any waste from the area. Do not smear or wipe any of the accident in to the carpet. - Blot well. - Treat the accident with the enzyme product. - Cover the enzyme-saturated carpet with plastic to prevent the product from drying out. Leave it on for up to 48 hours. - Allow area to dry. - Check for odor and re-apply if necessary. - If the carpet has changed color, try sponging with an ammonia solution. - Sprinkle with baking soda to remove odors. Vacuum baking soda after it dries. If the accident is on upholstery - Remove waste from area but do not smear the accident into the fabric. - Sprinkle with baking soda to remove odors and absorb liquid. Vacuum baking soda after it dries. - Stop! Make sure you can clean with water. Water will burn some upholstery. - Test an inconspicuous area with water. If the fabric discolors, call a professional to deal with the pet stain and odor. - If the test area does not stain, proceed cautiously. Use an extraction machine to remove as much moisture as you can and follow with an upholstery cleaning product.
