How to Whiten Your Teeth

Want a picture perfect smile? Think about cosmetic dentistry to whiten your teeth. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), 84% of dentists now offer this service because cosmetic dentistry can dramatically improve appearance.

There are several ways to go about whitening your teeth: teeth whitening, tray bleaching, veneers, and bonding.

Teeth whitening uses bleach to whiten and brighten teeth that are discolored because of genetics, medication, smoking or excessive coffee or tea consumption.

Tray bleaching is an inexpensive process that can be done in the home. Bleaching material is put into a mouthpiece for a brief amount of time each day and lightens teeth gradually. Laser bleaching, performed in a dentist's office, can offers immediate results. In this method of bleaching a dentist uses a chemical gel and laser light to whiten your teeth.

Veneers are thin porcelain or composite laminates that are adhered to you teeth. They are best used by people who have holes, cracks, or uneven surfaces on their teeth. Veneers can be expensive but they last for 10 to 15 years.

You may want to try one of the over-the-counter whitening solutions before going to your dentist. They come in several varieties, some you use a tray, others you apply a plastic coated with gel. Find a solution you are comfortable with.
