How to Choose the Right College

An early start to choosing a college will give you more time to make an informed choice and obtain financial aid. You goal is to find a college that matches your personality and career goals and also to find a college in which you feel comfortable.

Your goals, interests, and strengths and weaknesses will help you determine the career path that is right for you. If you know what you want to study, this step is easy. Some people have natural talents and interests in an area and have no difficulty deciding what they want to study in college. If you haven't picked a major, parents, mentors, and peers can help you decide what subjects of study would be good for you. Also, visit college web sites and study brochures to explore what each college has to offer. It is important to keep an open mind.

A campus visit is very important to see if the college is the right fit for your personality and is a very important part of the how to choose a college process. If you feel comfortable there and feel the amenities of the college such as dining rooms, academic reputation and social life are right for you this is an easy choice. However, if you like several colleges, take a more in-depth look at the school. Speak to a faculty member in your area of interest and find out what the department has to offer you and stop at the financial aid office to make sure the school will work with you to finance your education. Remember, next to a house, your college education will be one of the most expensive purchases you will ever make. If possible, try to visit the campus during the academic year to really get a sense of what it would be like to go to school there.

Finally, it would be tragic to be regected by a school you want to attend because you missed a deadline for application, scholarship, or housing. Keep a chart with the information clearly outlined and highlight the deadlines. This will help you file all important papers correctly.
