Network Elements - Network+ Certification Tutorial

Peer-to-Peer Networking: shared resources from workstation to workstation. Does not require a central server to provide communication between workstations, each workstation provides security and transfer information. Easy to implement, inexpensive. Hard to maintain security, good only for small numbers of workstations.

Network Equipment:

Cable: provides the pathway for network communication. Examples include fiber optic, coaxial, shielded twisted pair.

Network Interface Card (NIC): circuit card that fits inside the computer and connects with wiring to the network. Software drivers on the computer allow communication through the NIC.

Router: device which connects different topologies with the same protocol.
