Network Elements - Network+ Certification Tutorial

Half-duplexing: each device in the configuration can send and receive information, but only one at a time; while sending the device cannot receive, very much like walkie-talkies.

Full-duplexing: each device in the configuration can send and receive simultaneously. The best example of this is the telephone.

Networks:

LAN: Local Area Network. Usually wiring within a single building or a set of buildings.

MAN: Metropolitan Area Network. Network of LANs in a city.

WAN: Wide Area Network. Network that spans a long distance.

Topology: A layout of a network, the way to lay a network out.

Network Equipment:

Server: device providing resources to other devices accessing the network.

Workstation: device that accesses the resources of the network servers.

Host: device on a TCP/IP network that offers resources, usually an addressable computer system, a server, workstation, minicomputer, mainframe, router.
