How Do I Write a Great Resume?

by Learnthat.com Staff on Tuesday, November 02, 2004

A resume is your way of capturing a prospective employers attention. It is the only way they will find out enough about you to determine if they want to interview you in person. Put some time and effort into your resume, your career depends on it.

First, if you have a short employment history, make all your information fit on one page. You would be surprised at how many employers will throw out a resume that is more than one page. This does not make sense of course, if you have 15 years of relevant work history, so just keep to the one-page rule as long as you can before flowing over to a second page.

• Define your objective
o What kind of job you are looking for and why
• Highlight your qualifications
o What certifications you have
o What software/hardware you know how to use
o What languages you are fluent in
o Whether you are a Sales Producer that surpasses goals
o Etc.
• Outline your work history
o Company names
o Dates employed
o Location
o Responsibilities
• List your degrees achieved
o High School Graduate? Name School and year graduated
o College graduate or higher degree? List all schools, degreed earned, and years completed

Do not forget that this document is the only “face” you have to show a company to get them interested in you. Format your font, lines and margins and make it look professional. Check for spelling errors and typos. Make your resume look like you put as much effort into it as you will into the job for which you trying to be hired.
