Perform post-installation updates and product activation.
Windows XP Professional gives you a 60-day period for you to activate the installation. If you are using a corporate version, it does not require product activation, however a retail version does. You should activate Windows within the 60 days or you will have very limited functionality.
After the OS is installed, you should also run Windows Update to update the operating system.
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on the Tools menu and select Windows Update.
3. Windows Update will upgrade the ActiveX controls for Windows Update.
4. You can either update the OS in custom mode where you pick all of the updates, or in an abbreviated mode where Windows Update automatically updates the system and brings it current.
5. You will probably need to run Windows Update several times to ensure all of the updates are downloaded.
