How Do I Write An Employment Ad?

by Jeremy Reis on Sunday, June 29, 2008

Writing an effective employment ad is the best way to find qualified candidates for your open position. An effective employment ad answers these questions: what is the position, what qualifications do you require, what kind of candidate do you want?

The Position

An effective employment ad states what the position is in the title. As potential employees scan the ads, the headline will catch their eye as one they are qualified or interested in. If the job does not have a formal title, begin the ad with a two or three word description of the type of work.

Job Requirements

List the qualities you are looking for in the candidate including: professional experience, education, skills, background, location, certifications.

Benefits

You are selling yourself to the top candidates in a tight job market. Sell the candidate on why they want to work for your company -- "full medical, dental, vision benefits", "competitive salaries", "bonus potential."

Application Details

Provide the deadline for the applications to be received and how you would like to receive applications - email, fax, in person, via mail.

Your Contact Information

Don't forget to leave your name, company name, phone number, fax number, website, or email address for a candidate to contact you!
